All He Ever Wanted is the story of one's man's obsession for a woman and the lengths that he is willing to go through to possess her for himself, even, or ignoring that, his passion is unrequited. Though I'm not so sure that is the whole story behind the title. You could also say that all he ever really wanted was the Dean's post at Thrupp. I came across Anita Shreve's book "Stella Bain" on the new release shelf at the library and enjoyed it so much that I was eager to read other books she had written. When I realized that "All He Ever Wanted" was the same story, yet written from the husband's perspective, I had to have it.
