A South African by birth he grew up on a smallholding outside Port Elizabeth and in the city of Cape Town, where he attended the University of Cape Town to study literature. Bruce's exceptional novel has echoes of JM Coetzee's Waiting for the Barbarians, against which it more than holds its own ― Financial Times Wall of Days is a brilliant debut novel, in fact it is a brilliant novel altogether. 'Wall of Days' is a literary novel but Alastair Bruce is also a great story teller which is what really kept me reading, it also has enough substance to make me want to read it again. Definitely an author to watch.
